Alabama Grocers Association Holds Annual Convention with The Theme-
“A Quarter Century of Progress”
The Alabama Grocers Association recently held their Annual Convention at the Marriott’s Grand Hotel & Resort in Point Clear, Alabama.
The theme of the convention was “A Quarter Century of Progress,” as the Association brought members from all aspects of the grocery industry together to promote the growth and success of the food industry in our State.
The convention kicked off with the Larry D. Eddleman, Sr. Golf Classic at the Lakewood Golf Club. That evening followed with a silent auction and casino party.
First Place golf winners included Austin Virciglio and Andrew Virciglio with Piggly Wiggly of Jefferson County and David Gulledge with Coca-Cola Bottling Company United, Inc.
A silent auction and raffle chaired by Johnny Collins of Barber’s Dairy was held Monday night which raised more than $30,000 for the Alabama Grocers Education Foundation. This year the Alabama Grocers Education Foundation awarded 62 scholarships valued at more than $60,000, and to date has awarded more than 1 million dollars in total scholarships.
The business forum was held the following day and included Keynote Speaker, Mr. Harold Lloyd, a 30-year grocery industry veteran, who spoke regarding goal writing.
Harold Lloyd also moderated a panel, “A Day in the Shoes of a Store Manager,” alongside Robby Robinson, Food Giant; Tanya Murray, Publix Super Markets, Inc. and Steve Shelton, Western Supermarkets.
Ellie Taylor, President of the Alabama Grocers Association, moderated a regulatory agency panel that featured Lance Hester, Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries; Don Horne, USDA Food & Nutrition Services; Stacey Neumann, Alabama Department of Public Health, WIC Division; and Mark Sestak, Alabama Department of Public Health.
Following this panel discussion, Mr. Curtis Eilers spoke on the new USDA Meat Grinding Regulations to help retailers understand the logistics of the law.
Tuesday afternoon also included an exhibit hall with more than 70 booths with vendors from all aspects of the grocery industry.
On Tuesday night, the Chairman’s Banquet was held with Deana Carter as celebrity entertainment.
Agriculture Commissioner John McMillan addressed attendees on the state of Alabama agriculture and how his office will continue to work with the grocery community to serve the people of Alabama. Several Awards were given including the presentation of a Joint Resolution from House Speaker Victor Gaston, Alabama House of Representatives commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Autry Greer and Sons, an Alabama headquartered grocery chain.
Association Chairman Greg Gregerson presented Jack V. Greer, Sr. with the National Grocers Association Spirit of America award, a prestigious national award to recognize grocery executives involved in community and civic affairs.
Association President Ellie Taylor presented Mr. Keith Lusk, Golden Flake Snack Foods with the Spirit of Alabama Award, which recognized AGA members that are involved in the support of the Association and Alabama products.
